Throughout the day on March 11, 2019, officers of the Bancroft Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), participated in the March break Provincial Distracted Driving Campaign which is held from March 11 to March 17, 2019.
Officers laid a total of five distracted driving charges on drivers in the Bancroft detachment area.
All drivers received a Provincial Offence Notice for Drive Hand-held communication device and received a fine of $615.
In addition to the fine, each driver, upon conviction, will receive 3 demerit points towards their licence and receive a 3-day licence suspension from the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
After the licence suspension, the drivers will have to pay a $275 licence reinstatement fee to get their licence back. If the driver receives a summons or the ticket is fought in court and lost, a fine up to $1000 can be received.
On the second conviction fines can increase to $2000, there will be 6 demerit points and a 7-day licence suspension, plus the $275 reinstatement fee.
Third conviction results in up to a $3000 fine, 6 demerit points and a 30-day licence suspension, plus the reinstatement fee.

Anytime you are on the highway behind the wheel, stopped at a light or stop sign, you can be charged with driving distracted.
