Belleville now has a warming centre for the homeless, ready to go when the temperature drops and the winds blow.
City officials have been busy the last couple of weeks trying to come up with a centre, after learning the Grace Inn Shelter would not be open this winter.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk announced at city council Monday night that an overnight warming centre for the homeless will be available in the lobby of Belleville Public Library.
It will be open once the temperature drops below minus 15C, or below minus 20C with wind chill. until April 10.
The centre will be open on those cold nights from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. until April 10.
A security guard will be on site throughout the night.
Some of the $50,000 recently provided by council for a warming centre will be used for this centre, and the remainder will be returned to the grant committee.
