Belleville council members are facing salary cuts because of some federal government tax action.
Council is taking a close look at what it can do to the alleviate the situation.
The problem for council stems from the move by the federal government to repeal the one-third salary allowance that members of council did not pay taxes on.
Starting this year, the entire salary will be taxed.
It means $7,400 less on Mayor Mitch Panciuk’s pay cheque, and $2,200 less for each of the councillors.
Mayor Panciuk spoke to Quinte News on Wednesday, saying it’s the mayor’s responsibility to look out for council.
At its last meeting, council decided not to pass the by-law necessary for the change, but called for another staff report.
Council will consider the issue again at its next meeting.
