Statistics Canada has released information on immigration to the country from its census taken last year.
Nationally, a near record 22% of Canadians were or had been a landed immigrant.
Most recent immigrants to Canada are from Asia, with the second highest number coming from Africa.
The third highest number of recent immigrants nationally came from Europe.
Over half of all immigrants settle in the big urban centres of Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.
Locally, the immigration patterns are much different because of the area’s rural nature.
In the City of Belleville, just 8% of the population of close to 66,000, or 5,265 people, counted themselves as immigrants. Over half of the immigrant population came from Europe, with most of those being native to the United Kingdom.
In Quinte West, 7% of the population of almost 43,000 people were immigrants. The total number was 2,985. Countries of origin for the immigrants are basically the same as in Belleville.
In Prince Edward County, just over 10% of the population of 24,100 came from other countries. The vast majority of those people are from Europe.
