A longtime local politician has passed away after a well-publicized battle wtih cancer.
Trent Hills Mayor Hector Macmillan died this morning at his home in Campbellford.
Macmillan’s political career spanned 14 years, starting in 2003 and included four consecutive terms as mayor of Trent Hills, along with two terms as Warden of Northumberland County in 2007 and 2013.
His priorities as mayor included improving various parks and recreation facilities, housing programs and promoting Trent Hills to visitors.
Outside of politics, Macmillan made a strong push for IRE Nanoknife surgery to be performed in Canada, a treatment that he had flown to Germany for and his efforts have led to a three-year clinical trial of the procedure in Ontario.
Municipal flags will be lowered to half-mast in honour of Macmillan and a book of condolences is available at the Trent Hills Municipal Office.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be released.
