A Trenton-based elementary school was rewarded Wednesday for their commitment to physical activity with an Olympic athlete in their midst.
Former long-time member of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey team and four-time Olympic gold medallist Jayna Hefford was on hand to help St. Peter Catholic School in Trenton kick off the “Ultimate Play Day” event. She also participated in a “Snack with an Athlete” question-and-answer session during the event and signed autographs for students.
Hefford, who was born in Trenton and raised in Kingston, explains what it means to be able to bring an event like this to the community.
The “Ultimate Play Day” was rewarded through the “Hero of Play” program. The “Hero of Play” is a province-wide initiative created by the Canadian Tire corporation in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee to reward individuals who make physical activity a priority in their daily lives.
Principal of St. Peter Jackie Gauthier says it was an all-around team effort to get the event.
350 students at St. Peter participated in 10 different indoor and outdoor activities throughout the morning, ranging from sports like soccer, baseball, speedball and pinball, to games like Capture the Flag and Parachute, among others.
