The first public electric vehicle chargers could be installed in Picton next year.
On Thursday, Director of Community Development Neil Carbone told the committee of the whole that the municipality was successful in attaining a $75,000 provincial grant to install a dual electric vehicle charger.
Considering the stations are set to be built at the new parking lot at 55 King Street in Picton the committee also looked at carrying a motion to approve the entire $300,000 project with construction to being this fall.
Half of the committee was opposed to approving the capital project as it wasn’t budgeted for 2016 so the motion was lost. However the committee agreed to move ahead on the charging stations.
In 2015, council approved the purchase of the property at 55 King for $300,000.
During the 2017 budget process council will go over the project that includes 47 paid parking spaces.
The matter will go before council for a final vote.
There are currently several Electric Vehicle Chargers at local wineries within the County.
