Quinte area public health officials are calling on the province to make it mandatory that backyard swimming pools are surrounded by four-sided fences.
A recent health unit survey of community residents by the Hastings Prince Edward health unit showed 30% agreed that a fence should completely enclose a pool on four sides with no direct access from the house.
Sixty-nine percent of pool owners did not agree.
Medical officer of health Dr. Richard Schabas.
The health unit has been encouraging municipalities to pass by-laws making the four-sided fencing mandatory but Schabas says they want the province to set the law.
The board of health has decided to ask Northumberland Quinte West MPP Lou Rinaldi to raise the issue at Queens Park.
