In the beginning it looked like it would be a blowout loss. In the end, it turned out to be a shootout loss.
The Trenton Golden Hawks battled back from a 3-0 early second period deficit to force the game to overtime then a shootout before losing 4-3 to the BCHL champion West Kelowna Warriors. It was Trenton’s first loss of the RBC Cup although they do get an important point.
That point seemed unlikely after West Kelowna dominated the Golden Hawks while outshooting them 15-7 and taking a 2-0 lead in the first period. The Warriors made it 3-0 on their 19th shot at 1:10 of the second period chasing Hawks goaltender Daniel Urbani from the game. Jackson McIntosh, who has one start since late February came on and shut the door with 15 saves.
Meanwhile Trenton battled back with 3 straight goals in 7:50 by Hunter Fargey (1), Quinn Lenihan (2) and Lucas Brown (2) to tie the game before the end of the second period. The teams battled through a scoreless third and 10 minute overtime before Liam Blackburn ended it in the fifth round of the shootout.
Hockey Canada uses a 3 point system which gives West Kelowna 2 points for a shootout win and Trenton 1 point for the loss. The Golden Hawks still lead the standings with 7 points.
Trenton closes out the round robin against the host Lloydminster Bobcats Thursday night (9:20 Eastern on CJBQ) and have already clinched a berth in Saturday’s semi final.
