Mayoral candidate for the City of Quinte West, Shelley Stedall, was the latest guest for the Meet The Candidates segment on The Lorne Brooker Show on 800 CJBQ on Monday.
Stedall spoke of her background working for municipalities, not only as a councillor for Quinte West, but also working with city staff for a number of municipalities like Port Hope, Carleton Place, Smiths Falls, Quinte West, and most recently as Chief Administrative Officer of Stirling-Rawdon.
She was asked about what she would bring to the mayoral role.
“I’ve led teams, obviously not in the mayor’s role, but as the director of finance, director of corporate services, and chief administrative (officer), and brought the teams so that we’re working with a culture that fosters people that are going to be giving back to their community,” Stedall said.
“Getting the job done, and getting the job done as quickly and as efficiently as possible, I think that that’s the approach.”
During the call-in segment of the show, a caller asked Stedall about her decision to vote against one-time funding from the City of Quinte West to hire two more ER doctors for staffing at the Trenton Memorial Hospital.
She explained that part of the funding that was being requested, shouldn’t be coming onto municipal property taxpayers.
“Our property taxpayers are trying to pay for services that are integral, such as roads, water, sewer, bridges, parks, recreation, and emergency services,” Stedall explained on The Lorne Brooker Show.
“The hospital funding, I think, needs to be done on the provincial level.”
Stedall made clear that it wasn’t a vote against the specific request, but more the bigger picture issue of municipal and provincial responsibilities regarding healthcare in the province.
