Some birthdays are remembered for the gifts received. Sophia’s seventh birthday will be remembered for the gift she gave.
On July 20, Sophia celebrated her birthday by doing something extraordinary. Alongside her dad, Jason, and her aunt, Carly, she cut her hair as part of their Birthday Cut for Cancer fundraiser, raising an incredible $3,300 for the Oncology Department at Belleville General Hospital.
The fundraiser was inspired by the cancer journey of someone very close to their family. Wanting to help other patients and families facing similar challenges, Sophia set out with a simple goal: raise $100.
Instead, her kindness inspired an entire community.
Friends, family, neighbours and supporters rallied behind Sophia’s fundraiser, helping her raise more than thirty times her original goal. Throughout the campaign, Sophia carefully tracked every donation and personally thanked each supporter, proving that compassion has no age.
“Sophia reminds us that making a difference isn’t about age, it’s about heart,” said Amanda Grydziuszko, Associate Director, Annual Programs & Donor Engagement at the Belleville General Hospital Foundation. “Her generosity, and the incredible support shown by our community, will have a lasting impact on local patients and families receiving cancer care. We are so grateful to everyone who helped turn one little girl’s idea into something truly extraordinary.”
The $3,300 raised will help support cancer care at Belleville General Hospital, ensuring patients have access to exceptional care close to home when they need it most.
“Every donation represented someone choosing to stand beside Sophia and her family,” said Grydziuszko. “Together, they created something much bigger than a fundraiser. They created hope.”
As Sophia proudly held up her freshly cut ponytail alongside her dad and aunt, she wasn’t just marking the end of a fundraiser. She was reminding an entire community that even the smallest acts of kindness can leave a lasting legacy.
