Kingston Police and Fire announce that they have successfully transitioned to Next-Generation 911 (NG911) as of May 6, 2026, a modernized emergency communications network that enhances how residents connect with first responders.
NG911 is an upgraded digital network designed to improve public safety by enabling faster, more accessible and more detailed communication during emergencies. While residents will continue to dial 911 as they always have, the technology behind the network has evolved to better support both the public and emergency services.
NG911 introduces several enhancements, including:
- Improved access to more accurate caller information for communications operators that will help determine the caller’s location and phone number
- Enhanced network reliability and strengthened cybersecurity measures
- Enhanced backup capabilities to support continuity of service in the event of network disruptions
- Future ability for advanced features such as Real-Time Text (RTT) and live emergency video communications
Residents are advised that this transition does not affect how they access emergency services. In an emergency, continue to dial 911 as you normally would. There will be no changes to how calls are placed or how they are handled.
The Ontario government has provided more than $4.2 million since 2022 to support Kingston Police and Fire’s transition to NG911. “Upgrading Ontario’s public safety communications will be a game changer. Next Generation 911 gives first responders real-time, life-saving information which means a faster, more effective emergency response. Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government will always have the backs of those who protect our province. That’s why we are proud to provide funding for this new technology which will mean more calls will be answered, more lives will be saved and people across Kingston can count on emergency services when it matters most.” Hon. Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General of Ontario
“As a secondary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), our priority is ensuring seamless coordination with our primary PSAP, Kingston police partners, throughout the transition to Next Generation 911. Kingston Fire & Rescue is excited to be part of this important advancement, which will strengthen the resilience, accuracy and reliability of emergency communications, ultimately enhancing our ability to respond effectively and keep our community safe.” Chief Kevin Donaldson, Kingston Fire and Rescue
“Protecting the safety and well-being of our community remains our highest priority, and investments such as this are critical to strengthening the networks that support that responsibility. Next Generation 911 represents a significant advancement in ensuring Kingston’s emergency communications continue to be reliable, responsive, and equipped to serve residents. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of Ontario for their continued support in enhancing this essential service.” Chief Adam MacIntosh, Kingston Police
The move to NG911 represents an important step forward in modernizing emergency communications and enhancing community safety.
