The Town of Deseronto approved its 2026 municipal budget.
This year’s budget will see an overall tax increase of 3.15%.
According to the town in a press release, for a residential property assessed at $145,000, the budget represents an annual increase of approximately $87.50 per year or $0.24 per day.
Council also approved a 6.6% increase to water and sewer rates effective July 1, 2026.

The Town of Deseronto is pleased to announce that Council has approved the 2026 Municipal Budget.
This year’s budget includes several key investments and priorities:
Municipal
- Road resurfacing and infrastructure projects
- Enhancements to our parks, recreation, and community spaces
- Upgrades to the Deseronto Fire Station, including improved shower and washroom facilities
- Extensive administrative updates to the Town’s Human Resource Policy and Asset Management Plan
- Administration of the Municipal Election in October 2026
- Continued support funding for the Deseronto Public Library
- Ongoing investment in community events, including Family Day, Canada Day, Santa Claus Parade, as well as municipal clean-up days ( large item and seasonal leaf/brush)
- Continued delivery of core municipal services, including public works, cemetery operations, administration and community programming
Water and Wastewater
- Upgrades to the Mill Street–Maple Avenue pumping station
- Funds for Deseronto’s portion of the upcoming water tower replacement
- Various capital requirements necessary to sustain water and wastewater services
To support these initiatives, the 2026 budget includes a 3.15% overall tax increase, comprised of a 2.95% increase from the Town of Deseronto and a 5.3% increase from Hastings County. The total municipal budget for 2026 is $3,897,549.12, with $1.691 million coming from residential taxation. For a residential property assessed at $145,000, this budget represents an annual increase of approximately $97.50 per year or $0.24 per day.
To effectively meet the needs of the Deseronto Water and Wastewater Facilities today and in the future, Council has approved a 6.6% increase to water and sewer rates effective July 1, 2026. This adjustment will help support ongoing costs and maintenance needs, while contributing to the long-term asset management and critical infrastructure investments necessary to sustain water and wastewater services.
When asked to comment on the budget, Mayor Johnston stated:
“With the current economic pressures facing us all, Council knew the 2026 Municipal Budget process was going to be challenging. As part of the budget process, Council focused on establishing a reasonable tax rate while addressing both the operations, and long-term planning of our community.
The Town of Deseronto is committed to providing strong municipal services, supporting community development, and investing in critical infrastructure. After many meetings and collaborative discussions, Council believe the 2026 budget supports the current needs of the community while planning for Deseronto’s future.”
