The Quinte Judo club was well represented in Peterborough this past weekend, at the start of the Golden North Open Judo Championships.
Competing in his first event since starting judo this season, Doug Robinson fought in the U18 event for yellow to orange belts (novice) for those under 81kg.
Although Doug made weight for his actual category of 73kg, there were not enough participants so he stepped up to the next division.
Winning against two of his three opponents, there wound up a three-way tie for second place.
Robinson had to settle for a bronze medal, as the others had higher scores in their matches.
Also competing was Scott Morgan, in the veterans’ division (over age 30).
Unfortunately, with this being a new event and only 200 participants (kids through adults), he wound up in a combined novice division of three.
Ninety kg Morgan is 45 years old and was up against a 25-year-old, and a 140kg/6’ 5” fighter from the veterans pool (almost a foot taller)
Scott led his match against the 140 kg fighter with a couple of scores, but was eventually thrown for a full point which ended the match.
While he lost his next match, he brought home the bronze.
The next competition for the judo club will be the Tora Annual Judo Shiai (competition) in Brampton, April 26-27.
