Northumberland OPP have charged a motorist with impaired operation and seized a loaded firearm from the vehicle.
Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle near a residence on 7th Line Road in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officers attended and spoke with the driver, who was found to be wanted on a warrant.
An impaired operation investigation was initiated, and the individual was taken into custody.
A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a loaded rifle.
As a result, a 19‑year‑old male from the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand has been charged with:
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
- Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
- Fail to comply with sentence
OPP say the accused will not be named, as one of the offences relates to a time when the individual was a youth, and their identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
They were held for bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
