The Merrimack Warriors of NCAA Division 1 are off to the Hockey East semi-finals, thanks to Belleville’s Trevor Hoskin.
The Calgary Flames draft pick scored the game winner in overtime, as Merrimack knocked off the number one (Hockey East ranking/ fifth nationally) Providence Friars 3-2 on Saturday night.
The former Quinte Red Devil is in his sophomore year of NCAA hockey, but his first year with the Warriors, after transferring from Niagara in the off-season.
He is a fourth-round draft pick of the Calgary Flames and was selected following his breakout year in the OJHL with the Cobourg Cougars.

He says the Friars scored late in the game to tie it, but the team kept their composure.
Hoskin describes the goal for Quinte News.
“Stuck with it and my linemate Justin Gill took the puck through the middle, the “d” went right to him and I was flying on the wing, he found me, put it right on my stick and I saw the far side open, shot it, and kind of blacked out from there. Just a crazy moment.”

He says it was an incredible moment in his career, but the focus is never on personal accolades, but team success.
“As a Merrimack community, they’ve made it to the garden (TD Garden Arena) twice before, three times as a Division 1 program. Obviously we’ve got work to do, but for the school going to TD Garden, it’s a huge step in the program, putting us out there and building a name for ourselves.”
They will play UMass Amherst on Friday night, at the home of the Boston Bruins.
If they win, they will meet the winner of the other semi-final, Boston College and the UConn Huskies.
The winner of that will move on to the national championship.
