A Quebec man has been arrested after Ontario Provincial Police received a report of a suspicious person near Warkworth Institution in Brighton.
In a release from OPP, they say that Correctional Service Canada staff believed contraband had been delivered to the institution by a drone and that the aircraft was returning to its operator on a nearby road.
OPP officers patrolled the area and conducted a traffic stop on a pickup truck in the vicinity.
During the arrest, police say the driver attempted to drive the vehicle while being taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a drone.
CSC staff also recovered a package containing cannabis at the institution.
As a result, 25-year-old Abdou-Allah Chaouki of Quebec, has been charged with:
- Possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing
- Mischief – obstructs, interrupts or interferes with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation or property
- Dangerous operation
- Resist peace officer
- Driver fail to surrender licence
- Fail to surrender insurance card
- Delivers contraband to, or receives contraband from an inmate
- Flight from peace officer
The accused was held for a bail hearing and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
