Students at Belleville’s Nicholson Catholic College are going to be holding a protest on Tuesday against cuts to OSAP.
Over a hundred students plan to protest in Belleville’s Market Square after the provincial government announced cuts to OSAP as part of changes to how the province funds post-secondary schools. Previously, 85% of funding to students through OSAP was available as a grant, and 15% was a loan. The new system has 75% of funds be provided as a loan with only 25% as a grant.
Anna Baldwin Powell, a student at Nicholson Catholic College, says that students are worried that with cuts to student assistance, they won’t be able to afford post-secondary education.
Protests are planned involving other schools across the province including Centennial Secondary School in Belleville. Those protests are set to take place on Wednesday.
