Quinte News had an opportunity to speak with Olympic figure skater Trennt Michaud, the day after his incredible run at the Olympics with partner Lia Pereira.
The Trenton Figure Skating grad says having a team best in the Short Program and the Overall Score was special.
“I can’t lie, it’s a very proud moment for Lia and myself and our whole team. The Olympics is something you dream of going to and to be in the top ten at our first Olympics is pretty special.”
They finished third in the Short and skated to 10th in the Free Program, grabbing eighth overall.
“Definitely say that it’s probably one of our top performances that we’ve had, which is really exciting. Pretty cool to have, on one of the biggest stages in the world, and for our sport. You can see our reaction just after we skated – that’s what is important to us, controlling what we can control and feeling happy and proud of ourselves as soon as we finished skating.”
His long-time Coach Lisa Conley went to Italy to watch Michaud compete and said the accomplishment was incredible.
“You know you start with a skater and you don’t really expect this. You put the work in and I started with him fresh out of CanSkate and it’s been incredible. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions.”
Mother Lisa Fralick spoke to Quinte News the day after the Free Program.
“I couldn’t have grasped what the Olympics was going to be like, even just coming to the Olympics. Just being around all the different countries, whether you’re in an arena or at a restaurant even. Everyone’s getting along and talking and learning about each other. On top of that, to have my son be one of the elite athletes of Canada, my cup is more than overflowed.”
Michaud says the interaction with fans was also something to remember.
“The biggest surprise that I had throughout this trip has been, they talk about how Canada supports their athletes and how they’re behind them. On the way here just in general, there’s been so many Canadians that we’ve met who are just, have been so excited, you can see the joy in their eyes when they get to meet an Olympian. They say they’re so proud of us and you really feel that support.”
Michaud and Pereira now get set for the World Championships March 25 and 26 in Prague Czechia.
