Emergency overnight accommodations may be available when Environment Canada forecasts a temperature of -15° C or colder, or a wind chill of -20° C or colder, for Prince Edward County. If you need a place to stay overnight, please call the local Salvation Army office at 613.476.3159 or visit in person (46 Elizabeth Street, Picton) during the day and a representative will help connect you to available options. The municipality has shared this information with its network of community partners who help connect people with available supports.
Bitterly cold conditions will begin Friday evening and continue into Saturday morning, with wind chills near minus 30 to minus 33.
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Check on older family, friends and neighbours. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
The municipality and its community partners are monitoring community needs regarding adverse weather conditions through the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan.
