Prince Edward County Council discussed potential U.S. actions while reviewing a report on the county’s emergency management plans.
During Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council received a report from the Emergency Management Preparedness Committee outlining the municipality’s emergency preparedness, including steps the county is required to take by provincial law.
That report led to a discussion about recent actions by the United States, and the potential for conflict. Councillor Bill Roberts questioned if instability and aggression from the south were considered in the emergency plans.
“In any other year, this would be a crazy question,” said Councillor Roberts. “There have been some references to us assuming a 51st state posture, according to somebody in Washington. As crazy as that sounds, it might not be so crazy.”
Municipal staff advised council that such concerns ranked low on the list of possible hazards while the report was being prepared, but given recent events could be considered more seriously going forward.
The committee accepted the report with no further action after brief debate.
