It appears there are lake freighters hunkered down in southeastern Ontario waters, at least for the time being.
When the large cargo vessels go in and out of the St. Lawrence River, they come along the south edge of the Quinte region in Lake Ontario.
In recent days, there have been several lake freighters stuck in the ice, just off the south shores of Wolfe Island.
Sometimes we forget about the shipping system right in our back yard that moves billions of dollars worth of product to and from global markets.
The system goes from Duluth Minnesota on the west side of Lake Superior, throughout adjacent waters, to the Atlantic Ocean.
There are more than 100 Canadian and American ports along the system, including Picton Terminals in the vounty.
There are 140 million tonnes of cargo moved through the St.Lawrence River and the Great Lakes on an annual basis.
