The Quinte Economic Development Commission is preparing for a number of projects to be announced for 2026.
Executive Director Chris King spoke with Quinte News as part of our look ahead to the new year.
King says that the project announcements will be in the manufactoring and industrial sectors.
“We’re also looking at how to help position our manufacturers to take a look at some of the changing opportunities out there, and I’m thinking in particular around the defence sector and the energy sector,” King tells Quinte News.
“So as Canada is now spending 2% of their GDP on defence, and we’re going to get up to 5% in 10 years, we see a big opportunity to help position some of our manufacturers to tap into the supply chain in the defence sector. So we see opportunities there.”
Sticking on the theme of defence, King also tells Quinte News that there is also foreign direct investment opportunities to attract defense related industries to this region that the commission is looking at exploring.
“Whether it’s oil and gas or the nuclear projects that are out there, and maybe some opportunities too for our companies to become further integrated into those supply chains in the energy sector. So those are two things that we will be working on.”
King recently spoke to did a call with the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario and some of the region’s manufacturers to talk about some of those opportunities around the defense sector.
