“One, it creates a miraculous pipeline for people to be able to go to school here and then find a role. It also has created an opportunity for people locally, to have the opportunity to go to school here. With the addition of the programs, you’re also seeing people come from different parts of the province to go to school here, see what a wonderful community and what a wonderful set of hospitals, and then choosing to remain here.”
Daub adds that they also have an obligation to assist community members to choose other health care options when available.
“Well we’re talking about other health organizations, it’s also social organizations, businesses, the police. It takes an entire community to build health and wellness. Hospitals have an important role to play, but we should really focus on that role and the area I’m most excited about in the next year, is in the areas of mental health and addictions.”
She says she is hopeful that many new residents will be able to partner with a new family doctor.
“Jane Philpott, Dr. Philpott, has made historic inroads, both in policy but also investment with the government, and we saw the first investment in our community in primary care, of a magnitude that is larger than probably hasn’t been in in 20 years.”
She adds a new clinical service plan will be a focus for the year ahead.
“A few years ago we did a strategy and now we want to really think about the programs and services we offer across our hospitals and community, and reimagine those with our physicians and our community partners.”
