Prince Edward County Council is changing course on what to do with Wellington Town Hall.
At its council meeting on Wednesday, councillors voted to go forward with a process to transition ownership to a local foundation to turn the building into a community hub.
That is a reversal of its decision at Committee of the Whole to declare the building surplus and put it up for sale.
This on the condition that the group, the Wellington Town Hall Foundation, achieves its objectives within 12 months of signing a Memorandum of Understanding.
If the group is unable to reach its objectives, the option to put the building back on the market will remain an alternative.
The motion was passed in a 8-4 recorded vote.
Voting in favour were councillors Roy Pennell, Sam Branderhorst, Corey Engelsdorfer, John Hirsch, Chris Braney, Janice Maynard, Sam Grosso, and Mayor Steve Ferguson.
Those voting in opposition were councillors Phil St. Jean, David Harrison, Brad Nieman, and Bill Roberts.
