Cobourg Police Service (CPS) is launching its November Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) with a dual
focus on distracted driving and winter vehicle preparedness.
Police say distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable collisions.
Distractions can include texting, adjusting the radio, or even eating behind the wheel.
CPS reminds all drivers to stay focused, keep mobile devices out of reach, and avoid multitasking while driving.
“Distractions behind the wheel are entirely preventable,” said Constable Taylor Emmerton, Cobourg Police
Service. “We’re asking drivers to make a conscious effort to eliminate distractions and keep their attention on
the road.”
In addition to enforcement efforts targeting distracted driving, CPS is encouraging all drivers to prepare their
vehicles for winter conditions.
Drivers should:
• Check tire pressure and tread depth.
• Schedule an appointment to have your winter tires installed before the winter weather sets in.
• Replace worn windshield wipers and top up washer fluid with a winter-grade formula
• Inspect batteries, brakes, and lights.
• Pack an emergency kit with essentials such as a blanket, flashlight, and ice scraper.
“Safe driving starts before you even turn the key,” added Emmerton. “Taking time to prepare your vehicle can
make all the difference when winter weather hits.”
CPS urges all road users to prioritize safety through preparation and attention.
