We continue to receive reports of drivers failing to stop for school buses. One bus driver in the region reported that it happened several times in one day.
Failing to stop when the stop sign and red lights have been activated on a school bus is illegal, with penalties including a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points for a first offence. Subsequent offences can result in a larger fine and up to six months in jail.
More importantly, you are endangering young lives. Keep your eyes on the road (and not your phone) and always be prepared to stop when you are approaching a school bus from either direction. They must make frequent stops, and that means you may have to do the same if you are behind a bus.
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Focus on doing your part. Officers are out there watching. While they can’t be everywhere, they could be anywhere.
