Not surprisingly, the Liberal MP for Bay of Quinte riding is a big supporter of the just-announced federal budget.
Chris Malette says Canada and many other countries are facing “unexpected and unprecedented challenges” due
to the economic upheaval caused under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
to the economic upheaval caused under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Malette admits the $78-billion deficit number is a big one but adds it will come down gradually, leading to a balanced budget in a few years.
When it comes to the budget’s affect on the Quinte region, Malette points to the billions of dollars for the military.
“Don’t forget the early investments we’ve made in military spending that are affecting CFB Trenton 8 Wing that
that in turn are affecting the entire Quinte region.”
Malette says he hopes to be making announcements soon on new federal spending for infrastructure projects in the Quinte area with billions of dollars in new infrastructure money becoming available to provinces and municipalities.
Malette says Canada is an energy superpower and that the budget plan is the “right one at the right time.”
“It’s a credible plan to enable one trillion dollars in investment over the next five years. We have to do that.
We’re going to be masters in our own house.”
