A pair of county roads are set to be downgraded from asphalt to surface treatment, as part of Prince Edward County’s five-year road improvement plan.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, council received a report on the progress for the roads plan.
Part of the five-year roads plan includes downgrading County Roads 28 and 35 after a study found that they no longer received enough traffic to justify the ongoing maintenance cost of a full asphalt surface.
Councillor Roy Pennell said that it was important to try new methods to save money on road repair.
“I think this last year in particular, we have made tremendous strides in our roads program,” said Councillor Pennell. “So far, it looks wonderful. And I think through trying things like this, we may find we’ve got more money to fix roads.”
The downgrading of these roads is one part of the ongoing effort to improve the quality of Prince Edward County’s rural road network. The plan was originally started in 2023 and is set to continue through 2027.
Council passed a motion to continue implementation of the road plan after brief debate. The motion also called for staff to bring details on using outside contractors for road surface treatment to upcoming 2026 budget talks.
