Peterborough County OPP are investigating a distraction break and enter/theft that took place at a local farmers market.
On Thursday September 25, an officer was dispatched to a report of a break and enter/ theft at an address on County Road 2 in the township of Otonabee-South Monaghan. The caller advised that they run a farm, and on their property, they also run a small farmers market selling local produce.
Officers attended and spoke with the complainant who advised that at approximately 4:45 p.m., they observed a dark vehicle pull up and three males exit the vehicle entering the market. The males were all described as being between 5’4″ and 6′ tall, all with beards, and appeared to be of middle eastern descent. The complainant noted the vehicle was a hatch style that had no front licence plate and was not able to be recognized by the hood badge.
A family member was within the house, a short distance from the market, when they heard loud banging at the door. They went to the door and found one of the individuals who told them they needed to assist at the market. The family member attended the market only to find everything in order. They attempted to return to the house but were stopped by questions from the individuals. Moments later, the individuals returned to the vehicle which left the property at a high rate of speed.
A short while later, another family member arrived home and found that a bedroom in the house had been entered, and some jewellery had been taken. They noted that drawers had been rummaged through and left open with items being left out of sort. At this point they contacted the OPP.
Investigators are looking for information that may lead to the identification of the individuals and the return of the property to their rightful owners. Police urge the public to call in tips on this case, or others, to the Peterborough OPP at 705-742-0401, the non-emergency line (888) 310-1122 or to Crime Stoppers.
