It’s been a tough year for our local farmers.
The region has been in a serious drought situation for four straight months.
Prince Edward County farmer Lloyd Crowe, who is also the Director of Grain Farmers of Ontario District 13, says it is one of the worst years he can remember in his 50-plus years of farming.
Yields are less than half of what they usually are.
“So it’s anywhere from 10 to 20 bushels to the acre and it should be 50. It seems to be general. I’ve talked to a lot of farmers and that seems to be the case.”
Lloyd says the only crop that really did well this year is winter wheat which was harvested earlier in the summer.
It fared quite well because there was plenty of rain in the spring.
He adds western Ontario has fared better than eastern Ontario.
Lloyd estimates about 50 per cent of local farmers have crop insurance and many have already put in their claims.
