Preparation is underway to celebrate the Belleville Police Service’s 190th anniversary next year.
June 18, 1836, is the date the Belleville Police Service became formalized as a municipal police service, so 2026 will be the 190th year of the Belleville Police Service.
At the Belleville Police Services board meeting at the Belleville Police station on Thursday, Deputy Police Chief Sheri Meeks says she reached out to the Glanmore National Historic Site for a potential partnership.
“We have a lot of historical data artifacts, but also records that are formal records or written records, photographs that are out in the community right now, some are here, and some are out in the community , and we probably don’t even know what we have,” Meeks told the board.
“So Glanmore House has agreed to partner with us in terms of being a repository, but also in celebrating the 190th anniversary.”
Meeks says there has been discussion about putting up a display and that talks are still in the initial planning stages.
A motion was put forward to the board that any historical material received or offered to the Belleville Police Service for display purposes be referred, as appropriate, to the City of Belleville’s Glanmore National Historic Site for consideration of formal acquisition into the museum’s Regional Collection.
It would also be considered for the Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County for consideration of formal acquisition into the regional archival collections.
The motion passed.
