The future of the Front Street Farmers Market in Trenton was discussed at Quinte West City Council’s meeting on Wednesday.
Quinte West resident Elmar Heissler spoke to council about establishing a board to govern the farmers market.
He said after a less-than-ideal response to the city’s tender to run the market, a group of vendors formed an ad hoc committee and considered establishing a non-profit to run the operations.
The plan faced obstacles such as funding and legal requirements.
It was suggested by Heissler that the group and the city work together in operations, noting how the market helps the community.
Director of Community Services and Strategic Partnerships at the City of Quinte West, Jaclyn Grimmon responded that staff have been meeting with the vendor group.
She says the city is open to exploring different operational models, including a collaborative approach or continued city leadership.
No decision was made by council.
Market hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend.
