The Trenton Golden Hawks powered their way to a 5–2 win over the Collingwood Blues on Monday afternoon riding a dominant special-teams performance and a balanced-offensive attack to secure their third win of the season.
Trenton struck early and often, building a 4–0 lead through two periods.
Jack Ziliotto opened the scoring on the power play at 8:00 of the first, assisted by Reed Pettipas and Taeo Artichuk.
Nathan McHattie added another late in the frame, giving the Hawks a 2–0 cushion.
The second period saw Trenton capitalize again with the man advantage, as Jamie Darlison netted his first of the season midway through the frame.
Thomas Kuipers extended the lead to 4–0 with just four seconds left in the period, capping off a slick passing play from Artichuk and Ziliotto.
Collingwood finally broke through in the third, with goals from Brody Coe and Talan Palmer just over a minute apart, however, Kuipers sealed the win with his second of the game, an empty-netter assisted by Artichuk who finished with three helpers.
Despite outshooting Trenton 39–31, the Blues were stymied by goaltender Hayden Jeffery, who turned aside 37 shots for the win.
Trenton’s power play went two-for-six and was also perfect on the penalty kill.
Trenton’s next action sees them take on the undefeated Toronto Patriots Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
