The Member of Provincial Parliament for Bay of Quinte riding isn’t quite sure how he’ll vote should his party propose ending the use of Automated Speed Systems province-wide.
Premier Doug Ford recently called the speed cameras a “cash grab” warning that the province might ban their use because some larger communities are using too many of them or not installing enough warning signage.
Local MPP Tyler Allsopp admits he was a strong supporter of the speeding ticket systems when he was on Belleville council.
“My vote specifically was on Belleville council and our situation regarding speeding in our community. I’d have to
take a look at the totality of what’s going on throughout the province, how they’re being used. I’m hearing that I think it’s in Brampton or in Barrie they have 700 cameras in use so clearly some municipalities are abusing the system.”
Allsopp says Belleville is using the speed cameras responsibly and in the right areas and the thousands of tickets being issued in the city demonstrates that there’s a speeding problem.
