It is estimated that less than one percent of people will run and complete a marathon in their lifetime.
For those people that do, more than half will compete in more than one.
Sixty-three-year-old Robert Hanley, who comes from the Greater Tyendinaga area (Read, Ontario) has just completed his 51st marathon.
Hanley tells Quinte News the goal is to always reach new heights.
“It’s just exhilaration that you’ve conquered the distance. With all the training and the preparation that goes into it, could be up as much as a 16-week cycle. You’re always competing with yourself, and that’s the thing. You’re always trying to get better and better and better.”
What is even more rare is the number of people across Canada and the globe that have completed the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
It is also known as the Seven Star Marathon series.
“It was kind of a euphoric experience on a really nice day, at perfect weather conditions in Sydney. To know that you have something that even some of the fastest runners in the world don’t even have, is pretty amazing.”
