“Obviously Brownie was great for us, thought our D were great in front of him. Like you said, it starts from him all the way out. Obviously there were times where we spent some periods of time in our own end, but we weathered the storm. We have lot of younger guys in tonight that this is one of the bigger hockey games they’ve played before.”
Panetta says the atmosphere was a good preview for the new arrivals.
“It shows a lot of our guys that haven’t been here before what Wellington’s all about. It also gives them a little bit of an early taste to the rivalry that we have with Trenton. Happy with everyone all around.”
Wellington goaltender Jacob Brown made 34 saves in the win.
“Good to see the support from the fans back this year. It’s a new beginning for this team and I think we’re going to have a great season and this is just the start. That hometown rivalry really gets guys going. If there’s any game to wake up for it’s the home opener versus your rivalry team.”
Trenton Coach Derek Smith.
“We had stretches where we looked good as we were happy with our team and there were times where we weren’t firing on all cylinders. It’s something to work on, but obviously discipline needs to be better.”
Wellington went 3/4 in the power play, while Trenton was 0/7.
Trenton had more shots in the first period than Wellington did in the entire game.
The Dukes are now off until next Tuesday (September 16) and the G-Hawks host their home opener this Tuesday (September 9) at 7:30 p.m., when they host the North York Rangers.
Trenton will also be raising their OJHL Championship banner from last season’s Buckland Cup.
