Belleville council has delayed a decision on new parking fees and other measures in the downtown.
At Monday’s meeting, Councillor Garnet Thompson asked that the staff report proposing parking fee and meter increases for next year receive further discussion at the city’s transportation committee September 25.
Thompson said the staff report’s contents came as a bit of a surprise to some business and property owners in the downtown.
“The DBIA didn’t feel they had enough consultation time and with dialogue back and forth between the city and the DBIA there might have been a little confusion and so we’re going to give them the opportunity as they’re a vital part.”
Staff’s recommendations include increasing set fines for infractions, increasing the fee for daytime parking permits, and increasing the hourly parking rate to $1.50 per hour from the current $1.00 an hour.
Belleville’s current fines and parking fees are lower than in most other similar municipalities in the region.
