“I think we share an awful lot in common. Certainly our appreciation for Indigenous knowledges, for the respect that we hold for those teachings and as well, the centrality of the individual student that I think we also share.”
“It’s a perfect opportunity to support students along their learning journey, to build these relationships and friendships across the institutions, and for the students to be able to come to Trent to meet the professors and in particular our elders and knowledge holders.”
BACKGROUND INFO ON THE PROGRAM BELOW
Purpose:
To provide trustees with an overview of an articulation agreement between HPEDSB and Trent University – Indigenous Studies.
Link to Strategic Plan:
2025–2030 Strategic Plan Priorities:
● Advancing Indigenous Education and Reconciliation
● Strengthening Foundational and Real-World Skills
● Fostering Critical Thinking, Adaptability and Innovation
Background:
A dual credit is an opportunity for current HPEDSB students to earn a post-secondary credit alongside their Ontario Secondary School Diploma track credit. As a system, we are expanding pathway opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing university as a post-secondary pathway in Indigenous Studies.
Over the past year, HPEDSB and Trent University-Indigenous Studies Dual Credit Program have been collaborating to create a Dual Credit opportunity that facilitates student learning, minimizes curriculum duplication and facilitates the transition from one institution to another.
Current:
Beginning in 2025-2026, with the signing of the Articulation Agreement at the August 25, 2025 HPEDSB Public Board meeting, the opportunity for HPEDSB students in Contemporary Indigenous Issues and Perspectives in a Global Context (NDW4M) and/or First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Governance in Canada (NDG4M) will have an opportunity to earn the INDG 1001H 0.5 credit at Trent University that satisfies the Indigenous Course Requirement (ICR).
HPEDSB students will be participating in learning from professors from the Indigenous Studies Faculty
at Trent University.
The articulation agreement outlines how the experience and learning in these courses will be enhanced through land-based learning activities, events and potential lectures through the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies at Trent University.
Next Steps:
This opportunity will be piloted in 2025-2026 at Eastside Secondary School.
