Four groups of local residents, including business people, a public benefit corporation, a n0n-profit housing agency, and everyday citizens are teaming up with hopes of building affordable housing in Quinte West.
Quinte West Council has selected their proposal for two 42-unit apartment buildings on the former College Street School site in Trenton as best after an Request For Proposal process.
The development would be known as George Street Village.
One building would be reserved for seniors. The almost three-acre property is vacant and is still owned by the city.
The proponents still have to go through a rezoning process and have yet to arrange financing.
Both buildings will have three floors. The seniors building will feature one-bedroom apartments and other apartments of various sizes.
A public open house describing the plans will be held Tuesday August 5 from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m in Quinte West council chambers.
It’s hoped construction could start in 2026.
The groups involved are Connect Quinte Affordable Housing Corporation, a registered non-profit housing
agency, All-Together Affordable Housing Corporation, a public benefit corporation,
NOW Development Group, a multi-purpose housing/development corporation and
Springale Development Inc, a private affordable housing developer.
The affordable unit rent would be at least 20% below the official market rent as set by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
The property is just west of where Hastings County is now building an almost $13 million, 32-unit affordable apartment building on South Street.
