Quinte West OPP are cautioning residents of a scam making the rounds in the area.
Police say three residents were targeted in a version of the emergency scam, where fraudsters impersonate a family member who claims to be in some sort of trouble, pressuring the victim to send money urgently.
Some examples of the scam include needing money for bail, or unexpected medical expenses. The scam uses urgency and emotional appeals to trick victims out of thinking rationally about the situation.
In the most recent attempts, the fraudsters claimed to be a grandchild who was in a serious car accident and needed money or was in jail. In one case, a victim withdrew a large amount of cash for the fraudsters.
Police investigation into the incidents is ongoing.
