Another doctor has been signed to the City of Belleville’s Family Physician Recruitment program.
Dr. Ahmad Halabi has been signed to the program.
The signing was approved at a meeting of Belleville council on Monday.
Dr. Halabi was trained in Australia and is currently completing his formal residency program through Queen’s University and will be ready to practise medicine in July 2027.
“We are very excited that Dr. Halabi has chosen to bring his skills and practice to Belleville,” said Mayor Neil Ellis in a press release.
“As a family medicine resident here, he will be learning about our community and our residents during the last part of his formal training and will be ready to put his skills to use once he is fully qualified. Council is very pleased to welcome Dr. Halabi to our community.”
Dr. Halabi also commented on his signing saying in the release, “I look forward to serving the residents of Belleville and working hard to actively contribute to the community that I am excited to be a part of.”
The City of Belleville has been able to recruit over 50 physicians and eight nurse practitioners since the creation of the program.
Healthcare and physician recruitment are not a municipal responsibility.
The program is funded by the dividends the city receives as a shareholder of Elexicon Energy.
To date, over $9 million has been committed to attracting primary healthcare providers.
