The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) conducted targeted enforcement and education efforts involving commercial motor vehicles and modified vehicles last month as part of its Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP).
The initiative aimed to ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote responsible vehicle modifications to enhance road safety in the Town of Cobourg.
June results are:
• 10 charges related to unsafe or illegal vehicle modifications
• One vehicle removed from the road due to critical safety concerns
• Numerous warnings issued for minor infractions and educational opportunities
As part of the STEP efforts, CPS hosted two Commercial Vehicle Awareness Days in Cobourg, focusing on commercial motor vehicles. The event is a joint effort with the Peterborough Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, the Port Hope Police Service, the Belleville Police Service, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and other road safety partners.
The Commercial Vehicle Awareness Days aim to ensure that commercial vehicles, trucks, and trailers comply with safety regulations and enhance road safety in Cobourg and the surrounding areas.
The initiative will include engagement, education, and inspections of commercial vehicles by certified personnel from the MTO and the Peterborough Police Service.
During the two-day initiative:
• 27 commercial vehicle inspections were conducted
• 43 charges were laid
• 11 unsafe vehicles were removed from the road
CPS reminds all drivers to research and understand the legal requirements for vehicle modifications and commercial vehicle operation.
Unsafe modifications or non-compliant commercial vehicles can pose serious risks and may result in fines or removal from the road.
