Cobourg police are encouraging the public to take precautions after receiving a report of a distraction theft.
On June 18, a 76-year-old woman reported being approached by a woman in a retail store asking for assistance with clothing.
At the same time, a man went into her purse and stole her wallet.
The victim did not realize the wallet was missing until she went to pay for her merchandise.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-372-6821 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS.
Police say distraction thieves often work in teams, stealing wallets, purses, or valuables.
Their victim is distracted by a diversion they create or while the victim is in the parking lot, browsing in a store, or checking out at a cash register.
Victims may not realize until later that their property has been taken.
CPS encourages everyone to take steps to help prevent distraction theft:
• Be aware of your surroundings and pay close attention to your property.
• Be cautious if someone asks for help or offers to help you.
• Be aware if someone is standing too close.
• Keep your purse or wallet secured and with you.
• Keep your personal items within your eyesight while shopping, and do not leave any items unattended.
• Always lock your vehicle doors, even when you exit just for a moment.
• Report any suspicious activity to police. If the suspect is still there or in sight, call 911 immediately.
