The lucky winners have been announced in the Belleville General Hospital Foundation’s Car 4 Cancer draw.
The winner of the grand prize Corvette Stingray 3LT, is Kelly Gerow from Brighton. The 50/50 prize of $34,985 went to Diane Monds of Dundas.
The fundraiser raised $342,455, with the proceeds going towards new equipment for cancer treatment and diagnosis, along with paying for vital cancer drugs that some patients’ insurance might not cover.
Belleville General Hospital Foundation Executive Director Steve Cook said that they had people buying tickets from all across Ontario, which contributed to the campaign’s success.
“I think we were all shocked that it went that high,” said Cook. “I think we’d have been pleased if it went over $250,000 and then obviously it went past that figure quite quickly. We were like, oh, can it get to 300 and then we thought, oh, maybe it’ll reach 320 and then the sales this week have been incredible.”
Wayne Shepard, board chair for the hospital foundation, said that the costs associated with cancer care can be staggering.
“The public has been so supportive,” said Shepard. “Yeah, they’re buying a ticket thinking they’re going to win, but they know that only one person will win, and that the money is going to go towards the initial cause.”
The foundation is preparing another fundraiser draw in July.
