Northumberland OPP are alerting residents to a concerning scam involving the sale of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that may not meet Canadian safety standards.
Fraudsters are distributing unmarked fire safety pamphlets and fake safety checklists in an attempt to pressure residents into purchasing substandard alarms.
These scams are often accompanied by high-pressure sales tactics and requests for cash-only payments.
Police say some telltale signs of the scam include;
- No identifiable business name or contact information
- Requests for cash-only transactions
- Use of aggressive or pushy sales tactics
- Distribution of fake safety checklists or unofficial pamphlets
Northumberland OPP remind all residents to verify the legitimacy of any fire safety products or services before making a purchase. When in doubt, consult your local fire department or a certified retailer.
