The City of Belleville will be using funding from the province’s Building Faster Fund towards Phase 1 of the Avonlough Pumping Station.
The decision was made by Belleville council at its meeting on Monday.
Council learned the city will receive just over $801,000 for almost reaching its new housing-start target for last year.
The province determined 250 new residential units were started in 2024, just shy of the 258 starts target.
Ontario grants extra funding to those municipalities that meet at least 80 per cent of their target in any given year.
The city noted its figures were much higher than the ones reported by the province, showing 393 housing starts for 2024.
Councillor Paul Carr expressed disappointment.
“This is disappointing that we achieve it and most importantly, the private sector, who actually does the building, is building at 157% and we’re not getting the credit for it. So it’s unfortunate,” Councillor Carr said.
As part of the recommendation, council increased the Building Faster Fund by $801,000 and reduced Ontario Community Infrastructure Funding by $801,000 for Phase 1 of the Avonlough Pumping Station.
