The Wiggle Waggle Walkathon was another resounding success for the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward.
Interim Executive Director Chris Barry says about 100 walkers and their canine pals participated in Sunday’s event at Centennial Park in Quinte West.
While final numbers aren’t in, Barry says about $35,000 was raised towards the cost of caring for the animals they shelter.

Barry says the Humane Society cares for approximately 1700 animals annually.
Lately, it’s been a difficult go financially for the Humane Society with inflation hitting the organization hard.
In addition to general costs rising, so have veterinary fees.
The organization is aiming to increase impound fees through their contracts with municipalities as a way to increase revenues.

“As our municipal contracts come up for renewal, to make sure that we’re adjusting those contracts according with our municipalities to help better capture the true cost of animal care, not rely on donations so much to contribute to those costs.”
They renewed their contract with Quinte West last year.
Barry says they’ll look to renew with Belleville this fall and some smaller municipalities in the near future.
