The Northumberland Land Trust has announced they are receiving a new donation of land for use as a nature preserve.
In a press statement, the trust announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding for the future acquisition of more than 187 acres of land on Wilson Island in Trent Hills.
The property, currently owned by Jim and Anne Purvis, is located at the western tip of the island within the Trent River. The site is directly adjacent to Murray Marsh, which is identified as an area of natural and scientific interest. Nearly 100% of the land is in a natural state and is actively contributing to a healthy local ecosystem.
Provincially-significant woodlands cover approximately 130 acres of the property.
Species at risk including Eastern Meadowlark, Black Tern, Eastern Wood-pewee, Least Bittern, Red-headed Woodpecker, Wood Thrush, Snapping Turtle and Midland Painted Turtle have been identified on the property.
Due to higher water levels in the area after dams were installed making the area more difficult to access, the reserve will be closed to the public.
