A section of Wellington Main Street that’s been closed for several weeks for work on the trunk watermain and sanitary sewer project is slated to officially reopen this Sunday.
The section of Wellington Main Street between the water and wastewater treatment plants and Cleminson Street has been completely closed since early March while crews took on an accelerated work schedule to ensure the road reopened before the busy summer season.
Crews are currently laying the asphalt base before the road reopens this weekend.
Later this summer, a second layer of asphalt will be applied to the same section of Wellington Main Street, however, one lane will remain open at all times during that work, with traffic controlled by flaggers.
The additional cost associated with the accelerated construction is covered by the contingency built into the project budget approved by council. Current project expenditures are within the council-approved budget.
Work on the Wellington trunk watermain and sanitary sewer project continues on Cleminson Street.
While the sanitary trunk work is complete, installation of the water trunk on Cleminson Street will be completed within two to three weeks, weather dependent.
One lane of Cleminson Street will remain open to traffic at all times and businesses on Cleminson Street remain open during the construction.
The section of Millennium Trail between Cleminson Street and Consecon Street is the next phase of construction, which is slated to begin once the watermain installation is completed on Cleminson Street.
The section of Millennium Trail between Belleville Street and Consecon Street will be closed the rest of the construction season (late fall 2025).
Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to detour around the trail closure using Belleville Street, Niles Street, West Street, Wellington Main Street and Cleminson Street.
Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use caution while travelling on Cleminson Street as crews continue to work in that area.
The municipality is working to install additional signage along the detour route to help guide trail users. These signs will be installed in the coming weeks.
The section of Millennium Trail between Cleminson Street and Wellington on the Lake is expected to reopen in June when the Wellington Main Street road closure ends. The section is currently closed to allow emergency services access to residents that are located on the west side of the Wellington Main Street road closure.
